The Elfin Knight is a Scottish fairy tale about Janet, a fearless maiden who walks onto a forbidden moor on Hallowe'en eve and meets Tam Lin, a knight held captive by the Fairy Queen. To free him, she must wait at Milescross in the dark and recognise him among the riders by three signs. Then she must hold on while he is changed into terrifying shapes, with her courage as her only protection.
