The Cocoanut Grove fire of November 28, 1942, remains the deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, claiming 492 lives in a blaze that swept through the Boston club in just minutes[citation:2][citation:4]. The tragedy was made worse by locked exits and a single revolving door that jammed with bodies as over 1,000 patrons tried to escape a club licensed for only 460[citation:4][citation:11]. In the aftermath, survivors and staff reported paranormal activity at the site, now a hotel—disembodied voices, phantom water faucets turning on, and apparitions of victims still trying to find their way out. Some believe the ghosts of the Grove, like cashier Katherine Swett who stayed to protect the money, remain trapped by the panic of that night.
