- Disappearance: On February 13, 2017, Abby Williams and Liberty German, both students at Delphi Community Middle School, decided to spend the day together. They were dropped off at the trailhead by a family member and planned to meet up with Liberty's older sister, Kelsi German, later in the afternoon. When they didn't show up at the designated time, their families became worried and contacted the authorities.
- Discovery of Bodies: The following day, on February 14, 2017, search teams found the bodies of Abby and Libby near the trail. The location was in a wooded area not far from the Monon High Bridge.
- Investigation: Law enforcement agencies, including the Indiana State Police and the FBI, launched a massive investigation into the murders. They collected evidence from the crime scene and interviewed witnesses in an effort to identify a suspect.
