In Session 4 of The ACT Roadmap, we explore one of the most transformative ideas in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Self-as-Context — the observing part of you that is bigger than your thoughts, feelings, roles, and experiences.

Most people live as if they are their anxiety, their past, or the stories their mind tells them. In this session, I show how to step back and discover the stable perspective from which you can notice your experiences without being defined by them. Using powerful ACT metaphors like The Chessboard and The Sky and Weather, you’ll learn how to move from being caught in the struggle to becoming the space that holds it.

When you contact the observing self, you gain freedom — not because your thoughts disappear, but because you are no longer fused with them. This is a key turning point in therapy, allowing you to respond with wisdom instead of reacting from fear or habit.

The handout mirrors what I use in real therapy and includes exercises to help you practice perspective-taking, defusion, and psychological flexibility in daily life.
