In April 1971, Sri Lanka faced a sudden and violent uprising that nearly toppled its government. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), a Marxist-inspired youth movement led by Rohana Wijeweera, launched coordinated attacks on police stations across the island. Drawing on disaffected rural Sinhalese youth, the JVP aimed to overthrow the government of Sirimavo Bandaranaike. The insurrection was suppressed with help from foreign allies—India, Pakistan, the US, UK, and the Soviet Union all provided military aid. Thousands died, and Wijeweera was captured and imprisoned.
