And when the room got quiet, you reached for the emergency exit called humor.Proverbs 26:18–19 says:"Just as damaging as a madman shooting a deadly weapon is someone who lies to a friend and then says, 'I was only joking!'"Look at that comparison.Not a pillow fight. Not a prank.A madman firing deadly weapons—then lowering the gun and saying, "Relax! I'm just playing."You don't get to throw a grenade into somebody's dignity, watch the shrapnel fly and then hide behind a punchline.This is not a war on comedy. Laughter is sacred. It can heal rooms and expose foolishness without destroying anybody's dignity.But weaponized humor is cruelty looking for plausible deniability.It lets you insult your friend, embarrass your spouse, shame your child or stereotype your neighbor—then accuse the wounded person of being "too sensitive" for bleeding.Let me say it plainly:If everybody laughs except the person you aimed at, that wasn't comedy.That was target practice.Mutual laughter connects people. Humiliation isolates them. The difference isn't whether you intended harm. The difference is whether you care to confront the impact.Today is the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. While nations are being challenged to dismantle their arsenals, Proverbs brings disarmament closer to home.Dismantle that stockpile of sarcasm.Retire those words built for maximum damage.Stop keeping insults armed and ready in case somebody crosses you.And if your words wounded someone, don't say, "I was only playing."Say, "I was wrong."No alibi. No escape hatch. No demand that they laugh so you can avoid repenting.Humor that requires somebody else's dignity as the admission price costs too much.Make people laugh. Laugh loudly. But never confuse a punchline with permission to punch down.Because once the shrapnel lands in somebody's spirit, "I was joking" cannot put them back together.
