Up, up & away, Slackers!

Superhero movies are among some of the top grossing films of all time, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Christopher Nolan's Batman series being some of the very best. But before these movies could even exist, it was movies from our youth that set the stage for the big budget superhero franchises.

Although there were earlier films, it was 1978's Christopher Reeve led Superman franchise that really set the stage and launched the genre into the public consciousness. Then Tim Burton's Batman - with the highly controversial casting of "comedic" actor Michael Keaton - took it to the next level, effectively making the character of Batman a mainstream icon.

Of course there is the complicated relationship with both Sony Films and 20th Century Fox with Marvel - with both Spider Man and X-Men both having been licensed for film production long before the MCU was launched with Iron Man in 2008.

And the biggest question I have is: who are these movies even made for? Kids? Teens? Adults? Once again, is Gen X and our love for things from our youth (like comics and super heroes) partially to blame?
