In this lecture on Plato's Euthydemus, Socrates faces off against the brothers Euthydemus and Dionysodorus—flashy sophists who claim they can teach anyone virtue through clever verbal tricks and word games. Rather than dismissing this as a throwaway comic dialogue, we explore how Plato uses their hollow "gamesmanship" to draw a sharp line between real understanding and mere cleverness, arguing that language only becomes meaningful when grounded in inner, archetypal truth rather than rhetorical trickery. The lecture also traces the dialogue's central metaphor—getting lost in a labyrinth while seeking the "art of kingship"—back to the timeless choice between authentic inner freedom and submission to external tyranny.
