Old Dame Cricket is a short poem about a devoted mother cricket and her nine children, queer little chaps in glossy black caps and fine brown suits. When night falls and the birds are abed, she sends her brood out to make the dark earth glad. Their cheerful chirping swells into a full concert while she sits up to listen. It is a rhythmic, affectionate picture of a night alive with sound.
