In this episode, Lucas and Luna explore the story behind the Madaba Mosaic Map, a sixth-century floor map of the Holy Land discovered in a Byzantine church in Madaba, Jordan. Made of over two million tesserae, it's the oldest surviving original map of the region and a masterpiece of Byzantine cartography. We discuss its discovery in 1884, its depiction of Jerusalem with the Cardo Maximus, the Dead Sea with fish, and the Jordan River emptying into it. We also touch on Madaba's history from the Moabites to the Byzantines, the decline of the mosaic tradition after the Umayyad period, and the restoration efforts that have preserved this treasure. Plus, we consider what the map tells us about pilgrimage routes, biblical geography, and the multicultural world of late antique Jordan.
