Aging GreatFULLy brings listeners a heartwarming show on an important topic for everyone, especially those who have endured loss of any kind. Join us for “Leave Your Light On: Navigating the Lighthouse of Life After Loss,” as we welcome special guests Shelley Buck, Kathy Curtis and honor the illuminating life of Ryder Buck in this transformative hour that will endear all. This year in particular, has been one where we as a world have endured losses of all kinds and in this episode, our guests share firsthand how to come back out of the dark tunnels of despair from the most devasting losses one can imagine.
We also talk about the mysterious emotion grief— and how it can cripple us, empower us, and at times, be a major motivator in what changes us. Kathy and Shelley talk about using the light from our passed loved ones to shape that recovery and how to use it as a tool to live with more energy and purpose.
We bring this show to our global family of listeners as we enter the holidays knowing it is a time of challenge for many, as we are certain the lessons of parenting and tribulations, combined with the power of Ryder’s larger-than-life spirit will hold promise and bring profound messages to others for living in the light and ultimately being the lighthouse keeper once again for others. And we will celebrate light, love and learn how to find our way back living after experiencing loss as we explore in depth the book, Leave Your Light On: The Musical Mantra Left Behind by an Illuminating Spirit, by Shelley Buck & Ryder Buck with Kathy Curtis.
Our guest, Shelley Buck moved to California after college to follow her dream of working for Disney. It was there she met and fell in love with her husband, Chris, who worked in Animation. After they married and had their first child, Ryder, she stayed home to be a full-time mom to him and the two brothers who followed. Shelley is a storyteller and artist which she expresses through her original jewelry at www.Shelrae.com.
Shelley shares her journey of having a child diagnosed with cancer, what it was like to experience that and then to suffer the most unimaginable loss. But her story is one that brings a lifeline to others and some essential messages for those who have ever been in the darkness. And that is, how exploring the light that our loved ones leave behind can be the bridge between that light and our own healing.
Ryder Buck lived a short but charmed life west coast, where he fell in and out of love, and formed an indie band, Ryder Buck & the Breakers, that made waves all across the LA area. After a 9-month battle with cancer, Ryder emerged disease-free and fearlessly followed his dreams of changing people’s lives through his music. When tragedy met him on a dark highway, the light he had so fiercely protected throughout his life became limitless. His words and songs continue to carry that light forward. Ryder received the Flame of Hope Award (posthumously) from a local cancer facility where he and his band played for cancer survivors. Ryder’s dad, Chris Buck, is the producer of the film, Frozen and Frozen 2. Ryder became the inspiration for a new character in Frozen 2 and for one of the films songs. Kathy Curtis moved into Shelley’s neighborhood when they were both 12 years old and an instant, lifelong friendship took root. She has worked as a healing artist and writer since 1991. Her programs support the transformation of grief, illness, and emotional barriers through creative expression. She is the author of Invisible Ink, a memoir about her own journey through grief. The unique writing process that brought her so much healing has since become a successful program, online and at various venues in the Midwest. Kathy’s intimate connection to the Buck family, combined with her writing and healing background, made her the perfect person to partner with Shelley on the creation of this book.
