After the success of his bestselling memoir Look Me In The Eye, a Harvard neuroscientist asked John Elder Robison if he would like to join a study led by Dr. Alvaro Pascual Leone, one of the world’s foremost neuroscientists. They proposed to use Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)— a powerful brain therapy that’s FDA approved for depression —in an effort to understand and then address the issues at the heart of autism. By stimulating the outer layer of John’s brain, they hoped to induce rewiring that would increase his emotional IQ. SWITCHED ON is the extraordinary story of what happened next.

Before the experiments Robison was a successful car mechanic. Today he sits on boards and committees of the NIH, the CDC and private foundations. He co-chairs the neurodiversity initiative at William & Mary.
