A living system does not respond to every difference in the universe; it remains viable because some differences can enter its organization as signals, demands, and occasions for action. Through Cannon's homeostasis, Ashby's essential variables, von Uexküll's *Umwelt*, and Bateson's account of information as a difference that makes a difference, the episode asks how a present condition becomes consequential in relation to another. It keeps the claim disciplined: organisms are not little computers, and a literal comparator is neither life nor learning. Only in the closing movement does the Four-Bit Wonder return. Its 74LS85 gives the abstract argument a deliberately small material form by making a stored word lower than, equal to, or higher than a switch-selected target.
