On this episode of Let’s Talk About Healing, Yvonne Pierre welcomed Dr. Reena Singh to the show to discuss hormone health and aging. Dr. Singh is a Naturopathic and Functional Medicine Doctor who specializes in metabolic health and women's health. She helps women with weight loss, balancing hormones, and optimizing their health.

Metabolism is the process of taking energy from food and getting it to our cells so they can use it to perform various functions. Metabolic health is critical for our health and Dr. Singh discussed how hormones play a role in this. She discussed how hormones change throughout a woman's life and how understanding and addressing these changes can help optimize health. She also discussed the importance of finding a naturopathic doctor to help reverse the disease process and create an environment for the body to heal.

Metabolic health is a measure of how well we can extract energy from our food and environment and use it for our own needs. It is gauged by various markers such as blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and waist-to-height ratio. Eighty-eight percent of Americans are considered to have poor metabolic health, which is why it is so important to pay attention to these markers. High fasting insulin levels can be a sign of pre-diabetes and diabetes, even if fasting glucose and A1C levels are normal. It is important to get tested for fasting insulin, as this is the hormone that helps regulate the amount of sugar in the bloodstream. Managing blood sugar regulation is essential for feeling good, aging well, and maintaining hormonal balance.

The conversation discussed how hormones and diabetes are connected, and how understanding one's fasting insulin can help reverse the prediabetic state. It was noted that all hormones in the body are connected, and when one is imbalanced, it can affect the others. Diabetes, specifically, is characterized by high levels of sugar in the bloodstream and this can lead to elevated androgen levels in women, specifically. It was concluded that understanding one's fasting insulin is the first step to reversing the prediabetic state and helping to prevent diabetes.

Women tend to accumulate belly fat as they age due to increasing insulin resistance which triggers elevated testosterone and estrogen levels compared to progesterone. This can result in weight gain in the gut area. It is important to address underlying foundational systems such as the gut, liver, Adrenals, and thyroid to support metabolic health and hormones. The conventional medical system does not typically focus on these core underground systems, but they are key for overall health and hormones as women age.
