We have a fantastic gentleman with us today by the name of Zach Bitter, who is a phenomenal ultra runner. He’s a world record holder, he represented the US in ultra running, and is a national champion. An ultramarathon is any footrace longer than the typical 26 miles (42 kilometers) and Zach tells us all about how he got into these long distance races and how his journey to becoming a national champion has gone.
“I wouldn’t do my short intervals right away in that plan, I would be doing a lot of foundational development early, and then as I get closer to competition time is when I start doing those short interval events because those are gonna be much closer to the rate stay intensity. Kind of the same mindset with the hundred mile, but hundred miling, for me specifically, I’m very rarely going to cross my aerobic threshold on race day for something like that, so the intensity just tends to be kind of lopsided and that kind of puts it in a position where if you’re gonna really prepare for what you’re gonna do on race day, you need to be doing a lot of that when you’re, say, 6-8 weeks out.” 19:03
