Cities and towns throughout the country were energized, and on the evening of 20 June 2006, 21-year-old nursing student Frauke Liebs went to a pub in the city of Paderborn to watch the England-Sweden match with friends. While there, she visited and texted until her phone battery died. She stayed until just after 11:00 PM, then headed home with less than five euros in her pocket.
The walk home was a little over a kilometer and a half. It should have taken her fifteen minutes or so, and on a warm summer evening with the streets lit up by the glow of the World Cup, no less. But she never made it home and nobody saw her walking that night. Yet over the next week, her loved ones would receive strange phone calls and texts from Frauke, claiming that she'd be home soon...
