In 1968, at the height of the Cold War, four military submarines from four different nations vanished without warning [citation:1][citation:2]. The Soviet K-129, the French Minerve, the Israeli INS Dakar, and the American USS Scorpion were all considered modern, capable vessels—yet each was lost within months of the others, leaving behind grieving families and a mystery that remains unsolved to this day [citation:5][citation:11].

The INS Dakar was the first to disappear in January, the French Minerve vanishing just days later [citation:1][citation:10]. The K-129 went silent in March, and the Scorpion was lost in May [citation:2][citation:3]. The wrecks were found years or decades later—some not until 2019 [citation:1][citation:9]. Yet the causes of these tragedies remain unclear, with theories ranging from mechanical failure to covert clashes [citation:2][citation:5]. This is the story of how four submarines and 318 souls were lost beneath the waves in a single year—one of the most enduring enigmas of the Cold War.
