A year late but whatever! I'm definitely a Zahler fanboy and Bone Tomahawk straight up became my favorite movie after first seeing it and watching it MANY more times in the couple months after by forcing it on all my friends lol.... Mainly, I'm commenting about what y'all said about Nick's death. How he seemed like a young badass then just gets killed. Well... That's kind of "par for the course" for Zahler haha! If y'all haven't, DEFINITELY read his novels! Particularly his two Westerns "A Congregation of Jackals" and "Wraiths Of the Broken Land!" They're Westerns with Horror elements like Bone Tomahawk and actually make a kind ofnl cinematic trilogy with BT of separate stories, with different characters, all in the same world. All feature Zahler's great, well developed characters, unbearable tension, beautiful/emotional moments, and TERRIFYING villains committing absolutely HORRIFIC acts of violence! Anyway....... a common occurrence in Zahler's stories (esp his Westerns) is that the most gruesome and horrific violence happens to GOOD people! Then, the villains meet relatively tame ends! Plenty of bad guys get it good but the most grisly and sadistic acts are always reserved for innocent characters! It's all part of his knack for making you hate his villains so much that you are willing to ignore the fact that most of his "good guys" aren't exactly good... And are usually pretty shitty themselves. Example: rooting for Brooder, a womanizing, racist lunatic who kills native men, women, and children with out pause or SELFLESS reason and will murder 2 Mexican "travelers" on a hunch... All in all, the brutal shit that happens to the "good guys" in Zahler's work is what makes the tension so intense! I HIGHLY suggest y'all read ALL his novels but will settle for y'all reading his Westerns. Two of my favorite novels of ALL TIME, it's like Cormac McCarthy, Cohen Bros, Tarantino, and Asian Ultra Violence mashed up into beautifully told stories of smart, fleshed out chari, told with a precise brutality that is truly freaking haunting!
