When Chris comes back with an idea, your PNW podcast duo runs with it. What if our city of subdude excitment had a community pledge- what might it include? Tune in to hear what AJ & Chris came up with for our little city by the Salish Sea.

The Bellingham Pledge

Bend, Oregon is onto something...

Recently starting on July 1, Bend offers “on-demand, app-driven transit service to the public (https://www.visitbend.com/listing/ride-bend-free-shuttle-service/)” in summer until Labor Day from 12-8pm Sun-Wed and 12-9pm Thu-Sat.

* Download the Ride Bend (https://cascadeseasttransit.com/ride/ride-bend/) app.
* Summon one of three dog-friendly vans equipped with bike racks that seat up to 11 guests. One van is also ADA accessible.
* Take Ride Bend to your desired location within the service area, usually the perimeter of town.

Printed on the side of these shuttles is The Bend Pledge (https://www.visitbend.com/the-bend-pledge/):

1. I VOW TO BE A RESPECTFUL GUEST IN BEND’S INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACES.
2. I’LL MAKE MY OWN MEMORIES, BUT NOT MY OWN TRAILS.
3. I WILL BE RESPONSIBLE WITH FIRE DURING DRY SUMMER MONTHS AND WITH ICE ON SLICK WINTER ROADS.
4. I WON’T RISK LIFE OR LIMB (HUMAN OR SAPLING) FOR MORE LIKES.
5. I’LL BE FRIENDLY AND COURTEOUS, BECAUSE THAT’S THE BEND WAY.
6. IF I CAN’T FIND A PARKING SPOT, I WILL NOT INVENT MY OWN.
7. WHEN PLAYING OUTSIDE, I’LL PREPARE FOR SHIFTS IN WEATHER AND RANDOM EPISODES OF MAGIC.
8. I’LL PACK IN REUSABLE CONTAINERS AND PACK OUT ALL MY TRASH.
9. I WILL USE MY TURN SIGNAL OFTEN AND MY CAR HORN SELDOM.
10. I PROMISE TO LEAVE BEND BETTER THAN I FOUND IT.

Bellingham Pledges?

The City of Bellingham has a We Scoop Pledge (https://www.cob.org/services/environment/stormwater/Pages/scoop-poop-promise.aspx).
And the “I’m In for climate action now!” climate action pledge (https://www.cob.org/services/environment/climate/Pages/Climate-Action-Pledge.aspx) (kind of- its more of an incentive )
...but not a community-based pledge.

*We’ll go first. Presenting The Bellingham Pledge*

1. I will pick up discarded trash and put it in a garbage can because in Bellingham we don’t wait for someone else to do something.
2. I will allow a driver with an out-of-state license plate to merge in front of me as two lanes become one on Bellingham city roads.
3. If I have the financial means, I will pay for my for my coffee in the drive-thru window and the person behind me, because that is the Bellingham Way.
4. I will allow someone carrying only a few items in their hands to go ahead of me and my full cart in the grocery store checkout line.
5. I will park my vehicle toward the back of a parking lot to allow my fellow residents and guests of this city to park in closer spots.
6. I will listen more and talk less. (especially in public coffee houses!)
7. I vow to take life at a more subdued pace, to be present, and respectful to all walks of life.
8. I promise to support sustainability; starting with my actions first.
9. The outdoors is a place for us to show the best part of what makes us human; not a place to show our disregard to the ground we all live on or waters we live by.
10. I promise to do more on two legs, or two wheels, before raging behind the wheel of four wheels.
11. There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes...and maybe pointless umbrellas.
12. If I believe that children are our future; then give the vow to give the grace and patience to the mom (or dad) who has a handful with their little one (as opposed to just scoffing and eye-rolling)
13. I will subscribe to the Bellingham Podcast because I love this city of subdued excitement and I love AJ and Chris.

Whose job is it, anyway?

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.
