This illustrated children's book recounts the legendary tale of Dick Whittington, a destitute boy who travels to London seeking fortune. After finding employment in the grand home of Mr. Fitzwarren, Dick uses his only penny to purchase a cat to clear the mice from his attic bedroom. He eventually sends the feline on a trading voyage, where it is purchased for a massive sum by a king plagued by rodents. This unexpected wealth allows Dick to become a successful merchant and eventually serves as the foundation for him being elected Lord Mayor of London three times. The source also notes that the story is loosely inspired by the life of Richard Whittington, a real historical figure from the fourteenth century.
