A gang of bikers robs Mumbai, and a cop teams up with a motor-mad mechanic to run them down. Sanjay Gadhvi's Dhoom puts Abhishek Bachchan's Jai Dixit and Uday Chopra's Ali against John Abraham's Kabir, a thief with no grudge against the world and no plan beyond the next job. It feels like a nineties action movie, or a Hong Kong one with parts waiting for Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat, and its stakes are refreshingly low. This was Richard's introduction to the show, and the episode turns to why Western films lost this sense of fun.
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Richard Hatem (screenwriter and producer) talk John Abraham's low-stakes villain, the early Fast and Furious films as a template, musical numbers in movies that aren't musicals, actors who can't do comedy (and how Jingle All the Way happened), playback singers against stars who insist on singing, and why a film-school diet of foreign cinema left Richard braced for something difficult.
