It's part of the old school way to not talk about being a recovering alcoholic and addict I watched my father who passed away with 32 years of sobriety and yet very few knew about it. To me that is not a healthy way for others to learn and understand about alcoholism and addiction. My first go at sobriety lasted for five years most of those were living life as a dry drunk and not truly living life. I did the 30 day program at Greenbriar in Pgh Pa. I did meetings for the first two years and believed I understood the 12 steps. I had my ass handed to me in every way when I started believing the lie, just a drink here and there that ended up having me loosing everything in a matter of two years. I'm a single father and I have raised two boys on my own since they were babies. The 4th of July I stepped into a 30 day program at Makana rehab in Austin Texas. The process I went through there was nothing short of life altering. Being a addict and a recovering alcoholic the step of understanding that this was just two of the symptoms of a greater underlying problem. Just like Chris said a true rehab will absolutely break a person down in a methodical process that is necessary for us to find what truly is holding is hostage. Trauma, Codependency, griefand shame just to name a few that an alcoholic and addict problems stem from. It became very clear to me what was truly was keeping me from living life. The 4 week process brought shit out of me I didn't even know I had in me. We were all taught to rid of our resentments daily and if we don't that big heavy ball of hell starts building in our chest weighing us down. I absolutely agree so trade their alcoholism for the life of AA and that is a beautiful thing...for them but we have many other ways to keep us accountable. I'm very open to those that I build a personal relationship with about my alcoholism in full transparency simply because now those very people will call me on my bullshit!! Thank you all for doing the podcast I'm tired of seeing so many being lost and swept under the rug because alcohol is glamorized in all walks of life.
