Mandy Houghton was totally taken by surprise when diagnosed with cancer at her first routine colonoscopy at age 50. Since then, she’s been on a mission to educate others about routine screenings and knowing your family’s history. Oh, and she’s not afraid to talk about poop or farts nowadays. She has been married 25 years and has three adult children.

Kari Moncrief was diagnosed with breast cancer at a routine mammogram right after her 50th birthday. She was an educator for 12 years before moving from Louisiana to Raleigh. Now she works for the non-profit Western Wake Tennis sharing her love of tennis. She has been married to her hubby Jeff for 23 years and they have 2 children, a junior in HS and a sophomore in college. She loves playing tennis, spending time at the family’s mountain home and going on adventures with her family.

I am a cousin by marriage to Kari and I really enjoyed listening to her speak. I knew she had a cancer diagnosis, but I did not know the story behind it. I also was diagnosed with a cancer in 2018. What we (myself and two doctors) thought was a hemorrhoid was a squamous cell carcinoma in my anus. My treatment was chemo and radiation. I have been declared cancer free but my muscles are still trying to recover from the radiation. Like Mandy I need to stay near a bathroom ( my ascending colon was removed due to two small cancerous polyps) and I also have learned to talk about poop and farts. I am very glad that Kari shared this with me. I agree with much that was said by both women and I learned things from both that I was unaware of even after going through treatments myself. Various women in our family have been diagnosed with cancer in various forms and I appreciate Mandi and Kari's willingness to share their story.
