Sydney death/doom outfit Black Trillium have recently released the hauntingly beautiful yet still brutal single "Banished" from their upcoming debut full length The Fatal Shore, which is due out on April 29.
Guitarist/vocals Simon Skipper joins HEAVY to talk about the single and shed some light on the album.
"'Banished' started with a riff I wrote", he explained. "I came up with the first five notes just mucking around and then I heard the rest of the riff and I wrote that out and showed Zach (Carlsson, vocals/bass) and he was super excited by it and he actually came back with a full song. We added stuff and changed bits and came up with this really dark outro. We wanted to have some diversity with the album and we normally do a lot of slower, sludgier stuff but "Banished" is one of the groovier, more upbeat - and there's the chorus which is a bit of a hook - and it centres around that riff which we thinki is a big part of the song. Every metal song has to have a great metal riff (laughs)".
In the full interview Simon talks about "Banished" in greater detail and breaks it down lyrically, explains the concept behind The Fatal Shore, the research they put into the historical content and specific places they visited, modernising an old story to reflect current problems, having Tim Charles from Ne Obliviscaris on the single, how the upcoming album differs to debut EP The Locked Woods, releasing music out of order in relation to a concept album, how Covoid 19 has affected Black Trillium and more.
