Why did Jesus call Simon Peter a rock? In John 1:42 Jesus looks at an unstable fisherman and says, "thou shalt be called Cephas," a stone.
The Great Physician, G. Campbell Morgan Sermon Breakdown: Matt Hepner and TopLobsta read Morgan's chapter on Simon Peter.

Morgan calls Peter an "elemental man": a questioner with real intellect, deep emotion and tremendous willpower, and yet a weak man, lacking the one thing that welds those elements into strength. We follow how Jesus dealt with him: Andrew brings Simon, Jesus looks through him and renames him, then four crises (the hard sayings of John 6, Caesarea Philippi, the Transfiguration and the upper room), the look after the denial, the private appearance after the resurrection, and Pentecost, where Peter finally stands as rock. Plus Morgan's Westminster story: "I know someone who does believe in you."
