In this episode, Cassandra Vonnes, DNP, GNP-BC, APRN, AOCNP, CPHQ, FAHA, a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, and member of the GAPNA Communication Team, talks with Sherrill Wayland, MSW, the Senior Director of Special Initiatives and Partnerships for the Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders – known as SAGE – and the founder of the SAGE affiliate in St. Louis, Missouri, now called Missourian Aging with Pride.

Ms. Wayland discusses how she first became involved in life advocacy, her work with SAGE and services the organization provides to LGBTQ+ older adults, the role advanced practice gerontological nurses can play to ensure older adult LGBTQ+ patients receive optimal medical care and are not denied health care access due to biases, and advice on how nurses can meet the unique needs of this patient population.

Sherrill Wayland, MSW, is the Senior Director of Special Initiatives and Partnerships for the Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Elders – or SAGE. She is the founder of the SAGE affiliate in St. Louis, Missouri, now called Missourian Aging with Pride.

Cassandra Vonnes, DNP, GNP-BC, APRN, AOCNP, CPHQ, FAHA, is the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) Coordinator, Geriatric Oncology, at the Moffitt Cancer Center, in Tampa, Florida. She is a member of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association Communication Team and is a host of the GAPNA Chat podcast series.
