Great podcast but Mr. Clifton is still living in the '70s or '80s. Most of us have come to the realization that we're living in a post-loyalty, hyper-capitalist, society. I've never worked for a firm that even remotely cares about my well-being. They optimize the cost of labor for a given unit of labor. They provide only what they absolutely must (pay, benefits, flex, etc) to maintain an acceptable level of retention and turnover for both their staff and customers. Some firms have revolving doors, Dish Network comes to mind, other value retention more. It all depends on their industry their profit/quality structure. I've always thought of myself as a vendor. I don't take just anyone as a client (employer). We're either going to work together towards our mutual benefit or I'll go sell my services to their competitor and put my former clients in my sights. Welcome to 21st-century capitalism, we're not family or friends, we're business associates, and these days there is no room in business for anything but profit. Does that sound harsh? That's because it is, we started creating this society with Reagan then Clinton's deregulations. Give it a couple of years, remote workers will not just come from across the country but from around the world. I've already worked in an environment like that with my staff across 10 time zones. It can be done and it's very profitable...for the employer.
