Should customers of a city owned electric utility like BTU and electric cooperatives have access to other providers?

That was a question recently tweeted by Brazos County state senator Charles Schwertner during a hearing in the business and commerce committee.

Schwertner told WTAW News says 90 percent of the state has had the option of choosing their electric provider for the better part of 30 years.

He said it was time to look into whether the remaining three to four million people that comprise about 15 percent of the geography of Texas should have the same option of searching out the best price for electricity.

Schwertner, who brought up the idea during a recent hearing held by the senate's business and commerce committee, complemented the leadership at Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU).

But the senator says there are issues with the public power provider for Georgetown passing on higher than market prices to its customers.
