The Bryan city council voted this week to proceed with the financing the first portion of the new superpark. The $73 million dollar package includes $59 million for the superpark, $12 million for city infrastructure, and almost $1 million to buy a fire engine. City financial consultant Steven Adams expects the interest rate will be the lowest since the 1960's.

No increase in the city's property tax rate is expected due to the new debt being added at a time when old debt is being paid off. The council's vote was 5-1, with Mike Southerland voting no.

Bryan mayor Andrew Nelson, speaking on WTAW's The Infomaniacs, says a second search is starting for a private operator of the athletics facility that will be built at the former city golf course. Nelson says there was not enough time was given for companies to respond during the first attempt.

Nelson says the private operator will be involved in the building's design and equipment selection, which will also provide the opportunity to book national events in advance of the facility's opening. And Nelson hopes the facility will be fully booked when it opens, but the mayor says it may take two or three years to make that happen.
