A divided vote by Bryan's planning and zoning commission is upheld by an even more divided Bryan city council.

The council voted 4-3 against a more than $6 million dollar storage unit complex along the freeway between Premiere Cinema and Sam Rayburn school.

That's after the request for a conditional use permit was turned down by the planning and zoning commission on a 5-2 vote.

Both the city council and P & Z went against the recommendation of city staff, which recommended approving the permit.

Local attorney Chris Peterson, representing the applicant, said the land owner has tried since 2006 without success to develop the property.

Greg Owens and Buppy Simank, who made and seconded the motion to uphold the P & Z recommendation, had nothing to say. Nor did Andrew Nelson and Brent Hairston, who also supported P & Z.

Mike Southerland and Prentiss Madison said the developer did everything the council asked. They and Reuben Marin voted against upholding the P & Z recommendation.
