The College Station city council has given the green light to the police department's request requiring more work by pawn shops and second hand stores when they purchase items for resale.

There was no opposition to updating an ordinance in hopes of increasing the likelihood of police recovering more stolen property.

Assistant police chief Billy Couch says store owners who purchase items with a unique identification number can not sell it for five days. That's to allow CSPD to check burglary and theft reports.

Instead of entering qualifying property information on paper, it will be done online within 48 hours after being acquired by the store.

For items over $50 dollars, store owners must submit photographs and any unique identification number.

Exempted from the additional recordkeeping is second hand furniture, clothing, and children's or baby items.

The updated city ordinance will also exempt stores operated by charitable organizations and items covered by state and federal law, including guns.

Also exempted are items purchased at garage and consignment sales and at auctions.
