A descendant of New England witches, Boston socialite Martha Klemm finds herself drawn to the occult. She hypothesizes that while there is evil in this world its presence is as natural as good and it cannot be absolute. She supposes that a solitary get away to a "haunted" island will facilitate her meditation on the notion of evil.
