Willard McNauls compelling book delves into original sources to unveil the pivotal agreement between Thomas Jefferson and James Lemen Sr. In this arrangement, Lemen committed to journeying to the Northwest Territory to champion the anti-slavery cause. After a decade of relentless effort, Lemen Sr. founded his Baptist Church and played a vital role in the Baptist Association. Their organization was instrumental during the Illinois Constitutional Convention, advocating for the establishment of a free state. President Lincoln himself acknowledged Lemen Jr.s contributions in a heartfelt letter, stating that the dedication of Lemen Sr. set in motion the forces which finally made Illinois a free state. - Summary by fried1259
