Dive into the heartwarming tale of John Peerybingle, a kind-hearted carrier, and his young wife Mary, affectionately known as Dot. Their lives intertwine with the struggles of the poor toymaker Caleb Plummer, his cherished blind daughter Bertha, and the grumpy toy merchant Tackleton, who is set to marry Dots childhood friend May Fielding. Adding a touch of humor is Tilly Slowboy, the clumsy nursemaid to John and Dots baby, along with their loyal dog, Boxer. When a mysterious stranger threatens their happiness, the cricket chirping on the family hearth transforms into a fairy to avert disaster. Yes, its sentimental, but this enchanting novella, the third of Dickens short Christmas tales, is as delightful and captivating as its beloved predecessors, A Christmas Carol and The Chimes. Each chapter, playfully titled Chirps, invites you into a world of charm and joy. (Introduction by Ruth Golding)
