Discover the intriguing world of the kea (Nestor notabilis), the only alpine parrot on the planet and a unique treasure of New Zealands South Island. Known for its playful intelligence and cheeky antics—like tearing apart unsuspecting campers tents or raiding their packs—this large parrot holds a special place in the hearts of many New Zealanders. However, the keas story is bittersweet; once revered, it now faces the threat of extinction. Its decline began in the 19th century, driven by European settlers, their sheep, and the bounties placed on kea beaks. Written in 1907, The Kea a New Zealand problem delves into this fascinating birds behavior, habitat, and the troubling theories surrounding its predatory actions toward sheep. Join us as we explore the complexities of the keas existence and the historical context that shaped its fate. (Summary by Gail Timmerman-Vaughan)
