Joe Goossen was one of 10 siblings, all of whom were involved in some way with 10 Goose Boxing, the promotional company he co-founded with big brother Dan, who previously was an agent for Pete Rose and Mr. T. Their brother, Greg, was a three-sport high school athlete whom the reigning world champion Dodgers selected No. 1 overall in the Major League Baseball draft. Greg was swiped out of the Dodgers' farm system by Casey Stengel of the hapless Mets, who immediately promoted him to the big leagues at age 19. Little brother Joe watched all of that happen as an awestruck 11-year-old.
Joe Goossen grew up to be one of boxing's best-known trainers, working with Diego Corrales, Joel Casamayor, Michael Nunn, Rafael and Gabe Ruelas, and many others during a career that continues today: He currently trains Chris Arreola and Sergey Lippinets.
Goossen -- who also works today as an expert analyst for PBC's live fights on Fox -- gave us a full hour of his time this week to tell a zillion time capsule-worthy stories from a remarkable life and career.
We also get insight on the United Kingdom's vibrant boxing scene from British correspondent Paul McLaughlin.
And we open with expert analysts Travis Hartman, Rizwaan Zahid, and John J. Raspanti, who unpack the weekend fights, evaluate the many options of Canelo Alvarez, wonder why "Big Baby" Miller is already a candidate for Tyson Fury's next fight only weeks after his dirty drug tests, and much more.
This is a spectacular, two-hour version of The Ringside Boxing Show that delivers something for every boxing fan.
Dennis Taylor is host of The Ringside Boxing Show, editor/publisher of www.ringsideboxingshow.com, and co-author (with John J. Raspanti) of "Intimate Warfare: The True Story of the Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward Boxing Trilogy," an Amazon bestseller.
