Ben, you mentioned The Walking Dead again. I got into it late, in season 4 but got caught up. I hate gore porn and violence in general but the underlying story was compelling enough to tolerate them. I got desensitized enough to the violence and gore but that's when they were mostly killing walkers. This season though? I'm out. Done. I watched the first episode mostly with my eyes covered or head turned away so, at this point, what's the point? I get the Neegan character, and its necessity, but it's mostly gratuitous now. TWD jumped the shark.
Katniss is a classic reluctant hero, a role normally carved out for men. It's why her selfishness never bothered me, she didn't want the job. It was thrust upon her whether she wanted it or not, and she was a flawed person to begin with. A realistic person with a mother that neglected her and a sister that needed her. It fit the character, that she was selfish. Her badassness is mental/emotional, she's boldly outspoken too. No brawny type here, and I'm good with that. Anoa, you just wrong. Now, what do y'all think of Handmaid's Tale?
Superheroes and villians are not elected leaders, they are individuals with conscience and the will to act on it. And do so according to their own moral code, just like everybody else. I never thought of them as political actors, just people in their society.
