The Transport Agency say they are staying hopeful that they won't need to close Auckland's Harbour Bridge again today.
All lanes were closed for more than an hour this morning, causing a rush hour gridlock.
NZTA's Neil Walker told Heather du Plessis-Allan the forecast is looking good, so there may not be a need to close the bridge again this week, but they will not hesitate to close it if they have to.
"The main concern was any other damage to the bridge was a temporary fix was in place."
He says that the permanent fix to solve the problem is ahead of schedule.
"It's a two stage approach, so I think it's important to understand that.
"There's two things we need to do. One is to put a new fabricated part on the bridge, and the second thing is we need to re-tension the bridge."
Work to install the permanent 22 metre beam is expected to take place overnight on Saturday.
As a result, all southbound lanes into the city centre are scheduled to be closed overnight from 9pm Saturday evening, and will reopen midmorning on Sunday.
