show moreCalvin Schermerhorn grew up in southern Maryland and is a historian of American slavery, capitalism, and African American inequality. A Professor of History in Arizona State University's School of Historical, Philosophical, and Religious Studies, he has advanced degrees from the University of Virginia and Harvard Divinity School. He is the author of The Business of Slavery and the Rise of American Capitalism, 1815–1860, Money over Mastery, Family over Freedom: Slavery in the Antebellum Upper South, and most recently Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery.
