The Philistines don't realize it is God, not gods, because the Israelites aren't living like their is Yah-weh. From the corruption in the priesthood and everything else, if the people don't see who God is, the enemy most definitely won't.

And it also mentions that he fell backwards about the Ark of the Covenant being taken, not about his sons. Meaning, he knew what would to happen to his sons (based on Samuel's prophecy) and now hearing of the Ark, he fell back in disbelief and possibly grief and sorrow.

I think this points to the blasphemy that is happening within the Israelites. Even the enemy doesn't realize who God is because His own people don't even realize.
