Side hustle refers to freelancing, the gig economy (driving for Uber or Lyft, renting space via Airbnb, working for a food delivery service, etc.), selling online, small community-based businesses (like babysitting and dogwalking) and pretty much any kind of home-based self-employment.

 

 

Here’s my formula for finding out you next side hustle, developed after twenty-five years of living it.

Figure Out Your What and Why

You might think you know this already. I mean — duh, you want a side hustle because you want to make some money. What other reason?

 

 

Think about every job you’ve ever had. Every scrap of experience you’ve gained over the course of your life. Even if you’ve never had a job before, you’ve probably had life experiences that translate into marketable skills.

Here are some thinking points to get you started.
What were you good at in high school?What did you study in college (even if it was just one community college class)?What jobs have you had?Do you speak a language other than English?Are you strong and healthy? (This is a skill! Write it down.)What do you know how to do well?What do you have a knack for?What do your friends ask for your help with?What are you always asked for your advice about?Take a look at your bookshelf. What have you studied on your own?Do you have a family business?Think about your past experiences.
