Walz won the 97 kg bronze medal in men's freestyle wrestling at the U23 World Championships held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, November 21-16. He was one of three medalists at the event for the United States. Walz was a three-time NCAA All-American and ACC champion for Virginia Tech. He finished his collegiate career with 109 wins, the 10th most in program history.
