Dear Rebecca & Burns,

My older sister is a new mom and we are all thrilled. I'm not a parent, but I'm really worried about the way they are trying to get their daughter on a sleep schedule. Five weeks old feels way too young to make the baby sleep through the night. Over the weekend I stayed with them and I got up at one point with the baby because I couldn't bear to hear her cry.

I know you two are parents. What do you think?

This breaks my heart. I've had 5 babies. The pediatrician says they still get hungry every few hours that young. To let a baby cry in hunger or thirst, or just because it's new to the world and wants his mom's arms for comfort and security. I can't imagine. I read a research study on this once, and babies are learning to trust. If they don't get their needs met, they may stop crying because they've learned not to trust, but their stress hormone levels are still going strong. So they lay there in surrender because their cries for their needs aren't met, but they are still very distressed. Especially at 5 weeks old. Again, this breaks my heart.
