With excommunication in some instances the person in question if not repented isn't welcomed into the church at all, unless he/she by this punnishment later decides to repent and change their mindset, they can or at least have the opportunity after excommunication to ask for a vote from the elders to reinstate the membership on a trial basis. But there must be a disciplinary action taken once again in order to make sure the excommunicated is serious about his/her actions. Thank you for your shows.
