November 9: The pain of betrayal and how to overcome it.

Psalm 55:12-23:
For it is not an enemy who reproaches me; then I could bear it. Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me; then I could hide from him. But it was you, a man my equal, my companion and my acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked to the house of God in the throng. Let death seize them; let them go down alive into hell, for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.
As for me, I will call upon God, and the Lord shall save me. Evening and morning and at noon I will pray, and cry aloud, and He shall hear my voice. He has redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me, for there were many against me. God will hear, and afflict them, even He who abides from of old. Selah
Because they do not change, therefore they do not fear God. He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him; he has broken his covenant. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.
Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.
But You, O God, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction; bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in You.


Below the title of this psalm there is a description saying that the type of song is called Maskil (Maschil). According to theologians, this is a kind of song to ponder. Personally, I think it is a song with a melancholic melody style because usually when we read the psalms marked as Maskil (Maschil) we see that it is a song where the psalmist was going through a moment of despair. And is not for less. In these verses that I just read, we can see the hard time that the psalmist was going through. He was being attacked from side to side by his enemies; but they were not just any enemy. The psalmist declares that the one who was attacking him was his friend.
David described what his relationship with that friend was like. It was a very close and intimate relationship. This character shared his ideas and plans with David. We can also assume that he accompanied David to the house of God and advised him on the task David did in establishing and restoring the worship of God in Israel and Judah.
It is not known exactly who this person was but according to the story of king David, one of his great advisers named Ahithophel betrayed him, supporting the putsch (coup d'etat) that his son Absalom had planned against his own father.
Ahithophel was viewed with great importance in the kingdom, and David trusted him blindly. When Ahithophel opened his mouth, everyone listened as if they were hearing the same voice of God. He was a very wise man.
We even see that David's son Absalom received David's forgiveness when he killed one of his brothers and was allowed to return to Jerusalem. Absalom won the favor of the people, and while he deceived his father by making him see that he was submitting to his authority, on the other hand he was growing stronger by speaking ill of his father and increasing his influence and fame.
Both Ahithophel and Absalom gained the king's trust, worshiped along with him, and were at the royal table advising the king.

When David was betrayed, he was devastated, then angry and even afraid. However, David always had full confidence in the Lord. Let's look at the actions he took to overcome that betrayal:
First, he was sure that if he cried out to God in the morning, in the afternoon and at night, the Lord would hear him.
Second, he counsels us to cast the entire burden on the LORD, and He will sustain us. Why? Because God will not let the righteous down forever.
That's how it is! David had already experienced falls many times, but in those hard times he cried out to God and God freed and saved him from evil, restored him and put him in a high place.

Let's learn today from David. Although we go through one of the greatest pains that a human being can experience such as betrayal, you and I can take effective steps of faith to avoid falling into a state of depression and despair. Go to the feet of the One who remains always faithful.
Prepare your mind and heart in case you get to experience something similar, and don't forget the promise of the One who promised to be with us and lift us up in our difficult moments.

Noviembre 9: El dolor de la traición y cómo superarlo.

Salmo 55:12-23 RVA2015:
Si un enemigo me hubiera afrentado yo lo habría soportado. Si el que me aborrece se hubiera levantado contra mí yo me habría ocultado de él. Pero fuiste tú, un hombre igual a mí, mi compañero, mi íntimo amigo; quienes juntos compartíamos dulcemente los secretos, y con afecto nos paseábamos en la casa de Dios. Que la muerte los sorprenda y desciendan vivos al Seol. Porque el mal está en sus moradas, instalado en medio de ellos.
No obstante, yo clamaré a Dios, y el SEÑOR me salvará. Al anochecer, al amanecer y al mediodía oraré y clamaré; y él oirá mi voz. Ha rescatado en paz mi alma de la guerra que han desatado en contra de mí, aunque son muchos los que han estado contra mí. Dios oirá, y luego los humillará; ¡Él, que permanece desde la antigüedad! Selah
Porque no cambian de actitud ni temen a Dios. Más bien, aquel extiende sus manos contra sus propios aliados, y viola su pacto. Ellos ablandan su boca más que mantequilla, pero en su corazón hay contienda. Suavizan sus palabras más que el aceite, pero son como espadas desenvainadas.
Echa tu carga sobre el SEÑOR, y él te sostendrá. Jamás dejará caído al justo. Tú, oh Dios, harás descender a aquellos al pozo de la destrucción. Los hombres sanguinarios y engañadores no llegarán a la mitad de sus días, pero yo confiaré en ti.


Debajo del título de este salmo hay una descripción diciendo que el tipo de canción es llamada Masquil. Según los teólogos, este es un tipo de canción para reflexionar. Personalmente, pienso que es una canción con un estilo de melodía melancólica porque usualmente cuando leemos los salmos marcados como Masquil vemos que es una canción donde el salmista estaba pasando por un momento de desesperación. Y no es para menos. En estos versos que acabo de leer, podemos ver el momento tan duro que el salmista estaba pasando. Él estaba siendo atacado de un lado a otro por sus enemigos; pero no era un enemigo cualquiera. El salmista declara que el que lo estaba atacando era su amigo.
David describió cómo era la relación con ese amigo. Era una relación muy cercana e íntima. Este personaje compartía con David las ideas de él y sus planes. También podemos suponer que acompañaba a David a la casa de Dios y lo aconsejaba en la tarea que David hizo al establecer y restaurar la adoración de Dios en Israel y Judá.
No se sabe exactamente quién era esta persona pero según la historia del rey David, uno de sus grandes consejeros llamado Ahitofel lo traicionó, apoyando el golpe de Estado que su hijo Absalón había planeado contra su propio padre.
Ahitofel era visto con mucha importancia en el reino, y David confiaba ciegamente en él. Cuando Ahitofel abría la boca, todos lo escuchaban como si escucharan la misma voz de Dios. Era un hombre muy sabio.
Incluso vemos que el hijo de David, Absalón, recibió el perdón de David cuando mató a uno de sus hermanos y se le permitió regresar a Jerusalén. Absalón se ganó el favor del pueblo, y mientras engañaba a su padre haciéndole ver que se estaba sometiendo a su autoridad, por otro lado estaba haciéndose más fuerte hablando mal de su padre y haciendo crecer su influencia y fama.
Tanto Ahitofel como Absalón se ganaron la confianza del rey, adoraban junto con él, y estaban en la mesa real aconsejando al rey.

Cuando David sufrió la traición, estaba destrozado, después enojado y hasta con miedo. Sin embargo, David siempre tenía plena confianza en el señor. Veamos las acciones que él tomó para poder superar esa traición:
Primero, él estaba seguro que si clamaba a Dios en la mañana, en la tarde y en la noche, el Señor lo escucharía.
Segundo, él nos aconseja que echemos toda la carga sobre el SEÑOR, y Él nos sostendrá. ¿Por qué? Porque Dios no dejará para siempre caído al justo.
¡Así es! David ya había experimentado muchas veces las caídas, pero en esos momentos duros él clamaba a Dios y Dios lo libraba del mal, lo restauraba y lo ponía en un lugar alto.

Aprendamos hoy de David. Aunque pasemos por uno de los dolores más grandes que un ser humano puede experimentar como la traición, tú y yo podemos hacer pasos efectivos de fe para no dejarnos caer en un estado de depresión y desesperación. Ve a los pies de Aquel que permanece siempre fiel.
Prepara tu mente y tu corazón en caso de que llegues a vivir algo similar, y no olvides la promesa de Aquel que prometió estar con nosotros y levantarnos en nuestros momentos difíciles.
