In this excellent episode, Nancy and Jose are joined in the studio by Dr. Emily Schindler, the Director of Education at the Comic-Con Museum. Opening in the summer of 2021, the Comic-Con Museum aims to bring the magic of Comic-Con to the San Diego community throughout the year.

How exactly did Emily get involved with Comic-Con? From being a volunteer teacher in Ecuador to working in the Education Research Lab at UCI, all throughout her career, Emily has worked in education. Working at the Comic-Con museum was the perfect way for her to blend her experience of working with children, with her experience of building things, and her experience of centering stories through media.

Through her work at the Comic-Con museum, Emily aims to close the gap between the literacy that people use daily and the way literacy is defined in education. Comic-Con is a literacy community, focusing on reading, writing, speaking, and many other critical communication skills. Emily believes that the learning done at the Comic-Con museum will help focus learning in the service of meaning in addition to learning for skill development.

An excellent episode on filling gaps in the community with Dr. Emily Schindler. Here are some other takeaways from the interview:
  • Emily's education in college and beyond
  • How comics contribute to literacy and education and the benefits of the Comic-Con model
  • What Comic-Con contributes to the San Diego community
  • Emily's favorite childhood memories connected to literacy
  • The answer to the rapid-fire questions
An excellent interview from a passionate gap minder. Thank you, Emily, for your contributions in San Diego, and for joining us on The Gap Minders.
