Governor Abbott's state of the state address included the suggestion of making appointed appraisal district chief appraisers around the state an elected instead of an appointed position.

State senator Charles Schwertner, who represents Brazos and most surrounding counties, is not filing legislation. But Schwertner agrees with the governor.

Chief appraisers are currently hired and fired by appointed boards. The board chairman of the Brazos Central Appraisal District, Bill Lero, does not know what would be accomplished by electing a chief appraiser.

Lero says there is a public perception that appraisal districts have more power than the one thing the legislature authorizes...which is setting property values.
