Throughout his life and career, Gary, has known the importance of public service. The son of a United States Department of Agriculture grain inspector, Clyde Newnham, and a part time secretary, Bonnie Newnham, Gary grew up in Maumee as the oldest of three children. After graduating from Bowling Green State University, Gary was drafted and served his country in the United States Army. After being the distinguished graduate of his personnel management class, Gary was stationed at an Army base in Germany.

After his honorable discharge, Gary returned to Ohio to earn his master’s degree from Ohio University and law degree from the University of Toledo. With his law degree, Gary headed west to work for the Nebraska Indian Commission. In this role, he assisted Native Americans with their legal concerns and was actively involved with their culture. Before leaving Nebraska, Gary provided legal education and representation on topics such as insurance fraud and applying for government benefits to elderly citizens across eleven counties.

After his return to Ohio, Gary worked with the Lucas County Child Support Enforcement Agency, where he and his colleagues fought for the children of deadbeat parents who refused to provide child support. Retired from Lucas County since 2013, Gary now serves our community as a Guardian ad Litem for abused and neglected children whose parents have drug abuse issues. He is also the treasurer and a founding member of the Fallen Timbers Battlefield Preservation Commission. In this role, he has worked with the community, as well as elected officials like Representative Marcy Kaptur, to preserve the site of this important battle in our nation’s history.

In his free time, Gary is an avid biker, typically logging more than 50 miles a week. A sports fanatic, he and his wife have season tickets to Toledo Rockets football and basketball. He and his wife, Suellen, who is a retired public school teacher and administrator, have lived in Sylvania since 1993. Their only son, Nicholas, a 2002 Sylvania Northview graduate, lives in and is the Customer Service Manager of the Building and Zoning Department for the City of Columbus
