Pre-trial detention. According to The Bail Project, the vast majority of the time, millions of people are held in jail = pretrial detention, before their court cases are resolved. Many are charged with non-violent misdemeanors or are not a flight risk, and that horrible experience incarcerated takes its toll, through the risk of sexual violence, mental and physical health deterioration and lasting trauma.

Jeremy Cherson is the Senior Policy Advisor at The Bail Project, a national non-profit organization with a Cincinnati office, who explains why its unnecessary in the vast number of cases to keep people in pretrial detention and offers a better way to ensure people show up to court and that justice is served.
