Welcome to This Edition of RiversZen Today for Tuesday, November 6th, 2018

The news of the day: We have decided to extend Barbie’s name contest; but, will be selecting the winner of the selfie contest and announcing that winner tomorrow. There must be more of you out there who can come up with a creative new name for Barbie. There have not been very many suggested so far. I know you can do it.

The focus in class this week is our abs. They are kind of unique in that they aren’t attached to bones as many other muscles are. They are attached to tissue which is similar to tendons as found elsewhere in our body; except, this tendon like material is presented as a flat mesh-like surface. Your abdominals sit on top and are attached more like Velcro than a more traditional muscle connection. Try to become more aware of your abdominals and connect with how it feels when you breathe, stretch or flex. Do you suck your belly in whenever you exert your abs? What if you did not? What if you flowed with your breath and allowed the musculature to react; but, no deliberate effort on your part to force rock hard abs was made. There is no way to not engage your core when you stretch from side to side or perform any movement. Everything is connected. The dilemma we often have is that our body is not always strong enough to perform the tasks we wish and we need to compensate through our core or recruit other muscles in order to maneuver the load required. What if you started developing the musculature throughout your body? Start feeling the sensations throughout your body as you work toward balancing the load.
